The Jolly Roger is the name now given to any of various flags flown to identify the user as a pirate and is the traditional flag of American and European Pirates. Through history clans have distinguished themselves with many variations, often including swords, scimitars and skeletons. The most famous, and common Jolly Roger is the Skull and Crossbones, a skull over two long bones set in an X arrangement on a black field. Historically, the flag was flown to induce pirates' victims to surrender readily. If the pirates could cause enough fear and panic from afar, they didn't have to risk the physical danger of combat.
